'The Beauty Of A Woman Is Seen In Her Eyes, Because That Is The Doorway To Her Heart, The Place Where Love Resides'

My chosen practitioner is Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. I previously knew of her ‘Broken Wings’, inspired by Frida Kahlo (English National Ballet, 2016) and thought a woman choreographing about a woman who inspired her (English National Ballet, 2019) was empowering, something I am trying to achieve. I admire the impact she has on a male-dominated industry, her blend of classical dance with innovative movement, and how she creates work dedicated to an individual by delving deeper into their emotions and thoughts (English National Ballet, 2019). I will use video resources to form my own interpretations of her work and interviews to identify her choreographic techniques. From my research, I’ve begun to identify her style, such as her intricate gestural movement (Nashville Ballet, 2019) (Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, 2011) and use of the dancers’ eyes (San Francisco Ballet, 2018); I would love to incorporate this into my piece. I hope my research will lead me to a deeper understanding of her process and believe my findings will help me discover how to form unique and intricate choreography. However, I want to find my own voice, and not copy what I learn. My initial my aim is to explore what was important to her, but Lopez Ochoa has helped me to identify that although it’s easiest to create tasks from fact, that I find work most impactful when the performer exposes emotions. My objective is present to Hepburn as a human, and dedicate a significant amount of time to how I will perform the steps I create.
