'Living is like tearing through a museum. Not until later do you really start absorbing what you saw, thinking about it, looking it up in a book, and remembering - because you can't take it in all at once.'

I began my research exploring primary sources, such as video interviews and notable quotes, to gage a better understanding of Hepburn; the running themes highlighted her principles and her mannerisms which physicalised her identity, valuable for choreography. I was also inspired by many facts to create tasks, then interpret the emotional significance by layering thoughtful choreographic devices. I examined biographical and analytical articles from secondary sources, although many facts were not relevant, as I don’t want to follow the linear narrative of her life. However, information centred around the war, children, charities, and her uniqueness did spark my interest.

They led me to consider how these events shaped her, and what would she have been like without them? Other questions included: why was she so desperate for children, what were the lasting effects of the war, if she was unusual then what was the norm, and how did she stay so grounded? On reflection, I wondered further about her legacy, her values and what made her iconic?

It’s important for me to centre my creation around her because she has influenced so many lives and I wanted to uncover what she represents as a role model. Equally, I believe she led an important life, which so many of the general public are ignorant of.

My conclusion is that capturing ‘the true essence of Hepburn’ in one solo would be too large a task, resulting in a lack of focus. Instead, I have decided to create a piece which identifies ‘What was important to Audrey Hepburn?’.
