“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.”
My Final Evaluation
In my first proposal, I wanted to explore what made Audrey Hepburn who she was, which I later refined to what was important to her. My extensive research covered all aspects of what Hepburn valued, which I concluded all fell under being true to herself. In this sense, I achieved my initial aspiration, even without a tangible explanation. I also wanted to leave the audience feeling they’d ‘experienced the true essence of Hepburn’ which, from feedback, I achieved by playing Hepburn as a character. For myself, not only did I develop my acting, but I experienced the sorrow, joy and bravery she carried through her life.
Conveying all of my research was a challenge; Hepburn’s complexity only grew the further I delved into her life, but I found tasks gave me a thought process to convey the message. As I continued my research I added layers of meaning onto the choreography, in a similar way which I would add thoughts and a narrative to a role created by someone else. However, my contrasting tasks did produce movement that did not always flow naturally and I initially struggled to make transitions. After speaking further to my peer Max, I realised that contrast can be an effective choreographic choice, as they stopped my work from becoming predictable, and helped to represent the contrast in Hepburn's life. When I follow tasks I work in silence and later add music, however, this hindered the musicality and I was unsuccessful when trying to choreograph to each musical phrase. To compromise, I played each song on repeat in the background while working. This inspired me to dance in the style of the music, without the restriction and pressure to make a step for every note.
Overall I am proud to have created something beyond my usual range. Were I to have more time, I would have liked to develop my movement further with more choreographic devices, to make more unpredictable choreography. I made enough steps to fill the music, but I believe had I extended the content, I could have then edited it so the piece became more refined. I would have also liked to add sound effects. I loved the addition of Hepburn’s voice in the first track and would have been interested to integrate further excerpts of her voice. Additionally, I wonder in the second track, if the addition of sounds in relation to the information I was representing would have better communicated the message.
Having concluded my exploration, I have been left with many further questions. As someone who was shaped by her love for those close to her, I believe it would be fascinating to explore these people. Equally, the characters she played became so integral into her image, that I’ve started to question what of the things remembered were genuinely her. Today she is still hugely relevant, but what she would have viewed as her legacy? As a dancer and choreographer, I found my solo brought me a lot of joy, in particular the experience of playing Audrey Hepburn. I would love to work on my skills in more narrative choreography, and learn how movement can be used to tell a story, and not just investigate a theme.
